More than ever before women’s issues are at the forefront of political discourse and action. We need your help to save the California Commission on the Status of Women. Hope you can join us for this very special event!

The California Commission on the Status of Women (CCSW) has been the official voice of California women and girls for the past 47 years, advising the Governor’s administration on gender equity issues. Their main focus is to analyze proposed legislation for the impact it will have on California’s 18.7 million women and girls and then report their findings, serving as a lobbying tool for women in Sacramento. When decision-makers understand how their actions impact men and women differently, they are better prepared to make sound choices.

Since the Governor has proposed eliminating the commission, the only way for the commission to continue their important work will be to receive private funds, which is what the February 22nd event is all about. Please join us for a special event with Geena Davis supporting the California Commission on the Status of Women!

Date: Wednesday, February 22nd

Time: 5:30 pm VIP Reception/6:30 pm General Reception

Location: Fairmont Hotel – 4500 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach CA

Price: $125 individual ticket

Sponsorships: $5,000 Gold $3,000 Silver $1,000 Bronze

RSVP: Melahat at (949) 350-7733 or Melahat@canowfoundation.org

Or, click here to reserve your spot today!

Download the flyer here.

The proposal to eliminate the commission reflects a failure to understand the burdens disproportionately borne by women due to budget cuts, making the commission’s voice critical.

Women make up 50.3% of our state’s population yet have been historically underrepresented and undervalued.

· Only 28% of California legislators are women

· Only one Fortune 500 company in California has a woman CEO

· Only 16 of the top 400 California companies are run by women

· California women earn 84 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts; African American women earn 68 cents and Latinas earn 59 cents

· State budget cuts have disproportionately impacted women and children

· 40% of California women will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime, yet California has stopped funding domestic violence shelters

· IHSS, child care, health care and CalWORKs, serving primarily women and children have all been decimated through the budget cuts

· The highest number of jobs slashed because of the budget cuts here in California have included education, health care and child care – all of which are primarily held by women

Until women are in a place of power to demand equity, they need a voice in the state legislature. For 47 years, that voice has been the Commission. And because they are a nonpartisan voice, leaders from both sides of the aisle listen to them.

We need your help to save the commission! Please join us at this special event and spread the word! Together, we will make sure that the voice of women in California is not silenced!

This is from a post by NWPC-CA, dated Sunday, January 22, 2012

Today, in a huge victory for women’s health, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that most employers will be required to cover contraception in their health plans, along with other preventative services, with no cost-sharing such as co-pays or deductibles. This means that after years of trying to get birth control covered to the same extent that health plans cover Viagra, our country will finally have nearly universal coverage of contraception.

Opponents of contraception had lobbied hard for a broad exemption that would have allowed any religiously-affiliated employer to opt out of providing such coverage. Fortunately, the Obama administration rejected that push and decided to maintain the narrow religious exemption that it initially proposed. Only houses of worship and other religious nonprofits that primarily employ and serve people of the same faith will be exempt.

The National Women’s Political Caucus of California (NWPC) has announced its endorsement of Assemblymember Betsy Butler, who is running for re-election in California State Assembly District 50.

“We are proud to support Assemblymember Betsy Butler,” said Teray Stephens, President of NWPC California. “Not only has Betsy been a long-time active member and leader of NWPC, but she embodies the goals of our organization.”

Stephens continued, “Betsy has advocated for women her entire career, encouraged women to become involved in the political process and helped them succeed. Now, as an elected woman herself, she is fighting for equality, reproductive freedom and an end to violence and discrimination against women. Betsy is one of us.”

Demonstrating her commitment to these values, Assemblymember Butler authored legislation to ban the use of Bisphenol-A (BPA) in baby bottles and sippy cups which has been approved by both houses of the Legislature and was recently sent to the Governor for signature.

“We commend Assemblymember Butler for her work to protect infants and children and her continuing fight for stronger consumer protection laws,” said Stephens. “In the Assembly, Betsy has fought for legislation to expand health care coverage for women, promote mammography screening information and ensure that law enforcement agencies who collect rape kit evidence share that information with the Department of Justice.”

Assemblymember Butler is a former President of the NWPC-LA Westside Chapter. During her tenure, she helped grow her chapter’s membership to one of the largest in the state and worked with chapters throughout California to support candidate and campaign training programs targeted toward women seeking to become more involved in the political process.

“I am honored to have the support of NWPC,” said Assemblymember Butler. ”Not only am I a long time member of the organization, I am extremely proud of the work NWPC does to involve women in the political process, support women candidates and promote policies for equality, reproductive freedom and the eradication of violence and discrimination in our society.”

Assemblymember Butler has served as a mentor to women seeking election to political offices at all levels of government. She has raised tens of thousands of dollars for NWPC and women candidates and has promoted career options for women in the political, non-profit and public service sectors.

“Betsy Butler is a dedicated advocate who is committed to do the work to help elect and promote women, in politics and in life. She is a leader and a fighter for public policies that help women, families and all Californians,” concluded Stephens.
