The Trung Sisters
Prior to 40 CE, the Chinese gained control over Vietnam. Sisters Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị decided to lead a rebellion against the governor of the Jiaozhi province after he ordered the beheading of Trưng Trắc’s husband without a trial. Their movement quickly gained support and the Chinese settlements were outnumbered. Trưng Trắc was declared queen regnant - the first and only woman who would hold that title in Vietnam. Two years later, the Chinese emperor sent 20,000 troops to suppress the Trung sisters, who were defeated a year later and captured and killed. It is noted that there were desertions amongst the Trung sisters’ numbers because many were skeptical about victory under a woman’s rule.
The Trung sisters are honored today in parades and songs for the first rebellion against the Chinese after 247 years of control. The sisters are seen as powerful symbols of Vietnamese independence and freedom.
