Women’s History Month!
Did you know that Women’s History Month started out as Women’s History Week? In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women picked the week of March 8th to celebrate women’s achievements in history. This week was deliberately chosen in order to coincide with International Women’s Day (also March 8th). Other states throughout the country joined the movement, and in 1980, the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance) brought it to President Jimmy Carter. The week of March 8th in 1980 was the country’s first official Women’s History Month. Seven years later, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, which designated the entire month of March to honor women.
Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope” to honor the frontline workers amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as honor the ways women have provided healing and hope throughout history. This month we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite women throughout history. Who would you like us to talk about?
As part of celebrating Women's History Month, we are trying to be sure that we can support our endorsed candidates the best we can. You can help us do this and get more women elected by becoming a member and making a contribution to our PAC. Your money helps us financially support our candidates' campaign and ensures we see more progressive, pro-choice women in office.
